Decaen Editor is revered for his masterful lithographs, which combine artistic finesse with ethnographic and architectural accuracy. His "Atlas of Mexico" is considered a crucial document of historical and cultural significance, skillfully capturing a dynamic, multi-ethnic society during a pivotal epoch in Mexico’s history. Decaen’s exceptional eye for both individual character and monumental scale is evident throughout this collection, positioning him as a premier chronicler of the era.

This particular view of the Mexico City Cathedral stands out as a landmark image for its combination of artistry and documentation. Presented with running titles in both English and French, and backed by a meticulously researched context, the lithograph embodies the multicultural sophistication of the time. It shines as a vivid testament to the architectural splendor and societal complexity of Mexico’s capital, gathering within its wide canvas details of urban life, ceremonial structures, and the everyday presence of people identified at the time as “Mexican Indians”.

The harmonious palette of rich ochres, warm stone grays, and verdant greenery imbue the print with lively realism, while the sky’s soft turquoise and blush hues bathe the square in a gentle, inviting light. Subtle touches of crimson and indigo in the clothing of the foreground figures, alongside the mighty presence of the baroque cathedral, create a dramatic interplay of human activity and monumental permanence. Displaying this artwork offers more than aesthetic beauty—it is an invitation to reflect on the enduring legacy of Mexican heritage and cultural synthesis.
