Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) stands among the most beloved shin-hanga (‘new prints’) artists of early 20th-century Japan. His works are cherished for harmonizing traditional woodblock techniques with the atmospheric influence of Western art. Internationally recognized, Kawase’s prints are highly collectible, admired for their refined craft, and evoke a poetic connection to the changing seasons and the fleeting nature of time.
“Futatsu Hall in Nikko” is particularly notable for its masterful depiction of the grand temple structure nestled among towering cedars, their leafy crowns stretching skyward. A glowing red dominates the hall’s surface, contrasted elegantly with deep greens of the forest and splashes of blue visible in the sky above and reflected on the peaceful paving stones below. This interplay of color—vivid vermillion set against cool, tranquil tones—imbues the scene with a sense of calm and spiritual energy, evoking the quiet majesty of Nikko itself. The composition is accentuated by meticulous linework and subtle gradients that speak to both tradition and modernity.
Kawase’s deft use of color and shadow invites viewers into a world of meditation and stillness—a rare opportunity to own a work that radiates both cultural history and refined artistry. The inviting reds of the temple, the lush greens, and the clear blue sky make this print a striking focal point and a source of daily inspiration. With its timeless subject matter and balanced design, it is a treasure for any collector of Japanese prints or admirer of contemplative landscapes.
Bring home “Futatsu Hall in Nikko” as a striking gift for Christmas, housewarmings, weddings, or special occasions like Father’s Day or Mother’s Day.
