Emerging from the shin-hanga (“new prints”) movement, he revitalized the centuries-old tradition of ukiyo-e with modern sensibilities. Kawase’s open vistas and poetic renderings invite reflection, making his prints highly sought after by collectors and art lovers around the world.
Kawarahata in Gunma is notable both for its subject matter and its masterful technique. This work presents a captivating rural scene at dusk, with a thatched-roof farmhouse nestled alongside winding waterways, surrounded by a mosaic of paddies and gentle trees. The orange of the setting sun softly washes the sky and distant towns, beautifully complemented by the cool blue shadows and the subdued greens of early autumn foliage. Hasui’s ability to balance tranquility with vibrant color infuses the entire landscape with a sense of warmth and welcome serenity.
In this print, the harmonious interplay between orange, blue, and green tones sets a peaceful yet lively mood. Hasui’s delicate use of gradation—known as bokashi—brings the evening sky to life, while details like clustered trees and reflections in the water demonstrate his fine eye for natural beauty. The striking composition and appealing palette make this work a standout piece for anyone interested in Japanese art, interior design, or serene landscapes. It offers a window into a quieter, historical Japan, imbuing any space with grace and sophistication.
