Pine Trees After Snow by Hasui Kawase 1935
Pine Trees After Snow by Hasui Kawase is an exquisite woodblock print first created in 1935, a shimmering testament to the renowned Japanese shin-hanga movement. In Japanese, the artwork is known as 松の雪晴れ (Matsu no Yukibare). Hasui Kawase, celebrated for his poetic interpretations of landscape and season, captures here a tranquil winter scene that evokes the calm elegance of freshly fallen snow among grand pine trees. His works are deeply rooted in Japanese artistic tradition, blending nuanced atmospheric effects with a sensitivity to nature's ever-changing beauty.
This fine art print is reproduced with meticulous care by The Unique Maps Co., using museum-grade, acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas. Prints are available in multiple sizes to suit your interior, with optional bespoke framing or discreet personalisation. Each print is individually produced to order, ensuring the highest fidelity to the original vision and the luminous, textured quality that characterises Hasui’s best works.
Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) stands as a master of shin-hanga—"new prints”—a movement which reinvigorated Japanese printmaking with Western realism and atmospheric detail. His art is treasured both in his home country and internationally for its lyrical compositions and refined color palettes. Hasui’s profound sensitivity to seasonal moods and landscapes gained him not only immense popularity but also official recognition as a Living National Treasure in Japan.
The notability of Pine Trees After Snow lies in its effortless evocation of serenity. The composition situates tall, stoic pines braced against a deep blue sky while a carpet of snow blankets the landscape, instilling a sense of stillness and contemplative silence. Hasui’s ability to render wintry light, crisp air, and quiet majesty with grace and subtlety makes this print a quintessential example of his style, and a beloved classic among collectors of Japanese woodblock prints.
What makes this piece especially mesmerizing is its masterful use of color and texture. The dominant cool white of the snow contrasts beautifully with shades of rich blue in the sky and the lively green of the pine needles. The composition is harmonious, its crisp lines offset by delicate gradations in shading, guiding the eye gently across the tranquil scene. This piece brings not only a moment of peace into the home but also serves as a window to the Japanese countryside in winter—a refined addition to any collection of fine art.
Whether as an elegant gift for Christmas, a thoughtful gesture on Father’s or Mother’s Day, or a meaningful housewarming present, Pine Trees After Snow by Hasui Kawase carries with it both beauty and a whisper of winter’s contemplative calm. Ideal for lovers of Japanese art, printmaking enthusiasts, or anyone drawn to serene landscape scenes—a timeless treasure to grace any space.
