White Camellia by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, 1827
White Camellia, created in 1827 by the renowned botanical illustrator Pierre-Joseph Redouté, stands as a testament to the delicate and intricate beauty captured within Victorian botanical illustrations. Redouté, celebrated for his extraordinary skill and dedication to botanical art, devoted much of his career to painting the exquisite flowers of Château de Malmaison at the behest of Josephine Bonaparte, the wife of General Napoléon. The Belgian-born artist first gained prominence as a painting tutor to Marie Antoinette, which soon led to monumental success and a prolific career, resulting in over 2,100 botanical illustrations of more than 1,800 species.
